Benefits and comparison of SSL certificates

Support > SSL > SSL certificates

The encryption of data on the Internet is becoming increasingly important. In particular, sensitive data such as credit card numbers, access or address data should always be transmitted in encrypted form so that they cannot be tapped by third parties.

The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol or its successor the Transport Layer Security Protocol (TLS) protects your website and offers your customers more security thanks to the following functions:

  • VEncryption of confidential data during online transactions.
  • The certificate confirms that you are the owner of the domain (DV1).
  • The SSL/TLS certificate contains information about the owner of the certificate (OV2 und EV3).
  • The certification authority verifies the identity of the certificate owner (OV2 und EV3).

By default, a free FreeSSL certificate is generated and installed by Let's Encrypt for all domains and subdomains.

Comparison of SSL Certificates

Hoststar offers you three different SSL certificates. Here you can see the properties of the various SSL certificates:

FreeSSL - Suitable for public website without user data processing

FreeSSL we recommend for a basic encryption. With this certificate, all domains and their subdomains managed in your hosting package can be accessed via an encrypted connection. FreeSSL uses the certificates of Let's Encrypt.

StandardSSL – Recommended for online shop or customer portal

StandardSSL we recommend in case of increased encryption requirements. Would you like to run a web shop? Or are you interested in visitors being able to call up your Internet presence via a secure access? Then a standard SSL certificate is just right for you!

With StandardSSL, the certificate is always issued to a subdomain; example: https://www.domainname.ch.

PremiumSSL – Recommended for online shop and customer portal

PremiumSSL we recommend in case of increased requirements for encryption with several subdomains. If, for example, you want to provide an online shop with one subdomain and an area with confidential information with another, the PremiumSSL certificate is the right choice for you.

1) «DV» stands for Domain Validation. The certification authority checks whether you are the owner of the domain.

2) «OV» stands for Organization Validation. The certification authority checks whether you are the owner of the domain and whether your organization is legitimate. This check promotes trust in your website, as fraudulent websites fail these checks and do not receive a corresponding certificate.

3) «EV» stands for Extended Validation and means that the certification/registration body carries out even more detailed checks than with the Organisation Validation. In addition to the security lock, the address bar also shows the organization name in green. This is the highest security level for SSL certificates.

4) Hoststar checks the website and the deposited owner data before ordering the certificate from the certification body, which performs a domain validation (DV) before issuing the certificate.
