Configuring a Domain or Subdomain for an SSL Certificate

Support > SSL > SSL certificates

If you have ordered an SSL Certificate for your hosting, you can follow the instructions below to activate and use the SSL Certificate.

1. Log in

Log into My Panel (my.hoststar.ch).
(Log into My Panel)

2. Navigate

Click on the «Domain» menu item and then on «Settings».

Activate your SSL certificate as follows:

Activate and use FreeSSL

You can activate FreeSSL for your domains in the subdomain settings.

Click on the «arrow symbol» next to the corresponding domain and then on «Subdomains».

Click the «pencil icon» at the desired subdomain to edit the subdomain.

In the pop-up which has now opened, you can activate the «Activate Free SSL» in the «SSL Configuration» section by checking the box.

Don't forget to «Save» your setting.

The «FreeSSL» is activated a few minutes after saving. This can be seen in the detailed view of the subdomains.

If you want an automatic redirection to «https», please follow the instructions below:

Activating and Using StandardSSL

If you have ordered a standard SSL certificate and now want to activate and use it for your hosting subscription, look in the «Domains» section for the domain for which you have ordered the certificate. With this domain or an associated sub-domain it is possible to access your hosting via «https://» SSL secured.

Click on the «arrow symbol» next to the corresponding domain and then on «Subdomains».

The subdomains of this domain are displayed here. In our case with and without «www». These are listed here as inactive (SSL and HTTPS).

Click on the «pen symbol» in the www subdomain to activate the SSL certificate.

In the pop-up which has now opened, you can specify a forwarding type and in the section «SSL configuration» you can activate the «Activate SSL» by checking the box.

The following optional setting options will now be displayed:

  • Automatic redirection to HTTPS If this option is activated, every call to the StandardSSL (sub-)domain will be redirected from http:// to https:// . This is useful if you want to make sure that all calls to this (sub)domain use an SSL secured connection.
  • Set up as SSL main (sub)domain If this option is enabled, this (sub)domain will be considered as the main (sub)domain of the installed StandardSSL Certificate. When calling the IP address of the StandardSSL certificate in an Internet browser, the content of this (sub)domain is displayed. The IP address of the StandardSSL certificate can be found in the corresponding DNS settings after installing the certificate.

Do not forget to «Save» your settings.

When editing other (sub)domains, you now also have the option to activate SSL. Please note that modern Internet browsers will issue a certificate warning when you call the respective (sub)domain via https:// with SSL security, because with StandardSSL the effective SSL certificate is only valid for one (sub)domain.

After securing, the SSL certificate is immediately activated on your site. This is also shown in the status under Subdomains.

Activate and use PremiumSSL

If you have ordered a PremiumSSL certificate and now want to activate and use it for your hosting subscription, look in the «Domains» section for the domain for which you have ordered the certificate. With this domain and an associated sub-domain it is possible to access your hosting via «https://» SSL secured.

  • Automatic redirection to HTTPS If this option is activated, every call to the PremiumSSL (sub-)domain will be redirected from http:// to https:// . This is useful if you want to make sure that all calls to this (sub)domain use an SSL secured connection.
  • Set up as SSL main (sub)domain If this option is enabled, this (sub)domain will be considered as the main (sub)domain of the installed PremiumSSL Certificate. When calling the IP address of the PremiumSSL certificate in an Internet browser, the content of this (sub)domain is displayed. The IP address of the PremiumSSL certificate can be found in the corresponding DNS settings after installing the certificate.

Do not forget to «Save» your settings.

When editing other (sub)domains, you now also have the option to activate SSL. Please note that modern Internet browsers will issue a certificate warning when you call the respective (sub)domain via https:// with SSL security, because with PremiumSSL the effective SSL certificate is only valid for one domain and one sub-domain.

After securing, the SSL certificate is immediately activated on your site. This is also shown in the status under Subdomains.
