Frequently asked questions
about Windows hosting

Question:
FAQ Question:
What is the difference between Linux and Windows web hosting?
FAQ Answer:

The main difference is the server operating system used. For Linux, Apache or Nginx are usually used as the web server, while Internet Information Services (IIS) are used for Windows. There are also differences in the database server: Microsoft SQL Server is used under Windows and MySQL or MariaDB are usually used under Linux.

The scripting language PHP can be used on both systems, as can ASP, which was originally developed only for Windows servers. The .NET framework, on the other hand, only runs on Windows. Neither system is better or worse than the other. Ultimately, whether a Windows or Linux hosting solution is used depends on the requirements of the solution.

FAQ Question:
Can I switch between Linux and Windows web hosting?
FAQ Answer:

There is no general answer to this question. If you read the question about the differences between Linux and Windows hosting, you'll see that there are similarities. Even if it is possible to switch to the other server system, you should always ask yourself whether the change makes sense.
