Cloud server

With a cloud server, all you need is a tablet/smartphone/PC and an internet connection, and you can access your data stored in the cloud anytime, anywhere. This is particularly efficient if you're working on a web project in a team, but a cloud server is of course no less practical for individuals!

Web server

A dedicated web server is the ideal choice if you manage a large website with many sub-pages that are accessed by a lot of users at the same time. This could be an online shop, a larger forum – whatever your project requires in terms of capacity, you can rent a web server from us at a reasonable price!

Windows server

Windows or Linux? You can choose from various operating systems on your rented server. For example, Windows Server 2016 is available from our VirtualBiz package upwards, which is particularly recommended for beginners. Would you prefer Linux, Debian or Ubuntu? No problem – the choice is yours!

What is a virtual server?

virtual server (vServer) is a software server that is hosted together with others on the same computer. When you rent a vServer, you retain full control over your own area, independently of other users, and benefit from a wide range of services for your web project – all at a low price.

To ensure that the vServer is always ready for use, Hoststar relies on high-performance, branded hardware from Dell. With a rented virtual server, you have 100% control over maintenance, monitoring and design.

Frequently asked questions
about server hosting

What is hosting?

When it comes to hosting (also known as web hosting), a service provider, known as a web host, hosting partner or provider, offers memory space for websites to rent. This memory space is located on external servers. Each web hosting customer is then assigned a part of the memory and the services of a physical server – and consequently has access rights only to this part of the hosting server.

Hosting allows the relevant website to be accessible around the clock. (Incidentally, you can do this, but you don't have to set up a web server with a virtual private server – it's entirely up to you.)

A number of additional services are available as part of web hosting. For example, as a user you can register your own domain and also get your own e-mail address that does not have the suffix of a public e-mail provider.

Managed server, dedicated server, root server: what does it all mean?

There are different types of servers, so there is a risk of confusion when it comes to terminology. So when it comes to root servers, dedicated servers and managed servers, you should know:

  • dedicated server is not shared with other people (unlike a virtual server), but rather one person uses a physical server for themselves alone. Dedicated servers are well suited for medium to large-scale web projects.
  • Root servers are another term for dedicated servers. This term should not be confused with (full) root access, which you also have with virtual servers.
  • managed server is a dedicated server for which the service provider also provides maintenance and support.
Buy or rent a server?

Theoretically, it is possible to purchase your own server instead of renting it. However, compared to the ongoing rental costs, this is a very expensive undertaking. In addition, if you purchase a server, you bear full responsibility for it and must take care of any technical problems yourself, such as fixing a server failure.

What is a V-Server?

A V-Server is a virtual private server, i.e. a virtual sub-area (software) on a hardware server. The V-Server offers you capacities such as storage space on a physical computer that you share with other people.

You have full root access, your own IP address and can rent the V-Server at a relatively low price. Due to the very good price-performance ratio, many customers use V-Servers with the Linux operating system.

However, you have to install and configure the V-Server yourself and you are responsible for the security settings and creating backups.
