From 2015, SWITCH is ending its direct client business with .ch domains. This is a result of a recommendation from BAKOM, the Swiss Federal Office of Communications that .ch domains also adhere to the globally standard separation of roles. Until now, SWITCH has played two roles: the registry (of the administrator) and that of the registrar (of the provider to end customers). With the coming separation of roles in 2015, SWITCH must limit itself to administration, while provision to end customers is carried out by several registrars. As a consequence, the owners of the 1.3 million domains held by SWITCH will each be asked to move their domains to another registrar three months before the end of their subscription period.
