Back up the website

Support > > Security

Content management systems, shop systems, etc. have become very sophisticated and user-friendly. However, a large number of helpful features increases vulnerability to attacks. There are countless ways to attack a web application. By following these tips, you can minimise the risk of a successful attack on your website. Please remember, however, that there is no such thing as 100% security.

Always keep software up-to-date

Always keep your software up-to-date. Modern CMS and shop systems usually have an update function in the administrator area. If the software you are using does not include this feature, go to the manufacturer website and search for a newer version. Also check the version of the plug-ins and add-ons you are using. The developers may have recently released a new version. These updates often patch security gaps.

If you are using a software version that has received no updates for quite some time, check whether a new major version has been released or whether you can rebuild the website with a different piece of software that receives regular updates.

Selecting your software wisely

Generally it doesn’t make sense to use software that hasn’t been updated in several years. Even if you are extremely familiar with an ancient piece of software, the software may open the floodgates to hackers and malware. So it’s better to take some time to do a little research and find an up-to-date piece of software that meets your needs. Otherwise, your website may quickly fall victim to abuse. Please contact our support team should you have any further questions.

Password security

Please refer to our information on password security. Strong passwords pay off!

Use an SSL certificate

Encrypting data transferred over the internet is becoming increasingly important. Especially sensitive data such as credit card numbers, passwords and address information should be encrypted before sending so that it cannot be easily read from the data stream. Hoststar offers you everything you need for encrypted data transfer in your hosting account. Here you can find more information on Hoststar SSL certificates.
